On the 11th of September 2025, President Emeritus of Americans United–San Antonio, Eric Lane,
following up on his column in the San Antonio Express-News (see the column on the first page), spoke
before the Kendall County Democrats, with some 75 in attendance.

Lane argued that the Scopes “Monkey” Trial wasn’t about one man, teacher John Scopes. Rather it
was about whether America would ground its future in reason and science or surrender to religious
fundamentalism. The trial publicized the fundamentalist/modernist controversy which set modernists who
believed evolution could be consistent with religion, against fundamentalists who believe (and continue to
do so) the word of God is literally revealed in the Bible and takes priority over human knowledge. I was
there to let the Democrats know the trial never ended. And Texas is one of the main stages in this battle.
